The history of Crete is closely connected with the history of Christianity. According to tradition it was the apostle Paul who brought it here. And his apprentice Saint Titus spread Christianity over Crete. Since thenthis religion has become a part of the history and culture of the island.
Our acquaintance with the Orthodox Crete will begin with a visit to the Monastery of the Cross in Vosakos. This old monastery has known periods of bloom, as well as decline and oblivion. But now the monastery was restored again by the efforts of an ordinaryschoolteacher who became a prior in Vosakos. The church of the monastery keeps the relics of St. George the Victorious and the Holy Monk Savva the Sanctified.
Next stop isthe monastery of the Transfiguration of the Lord inHalepa. It is an ancient monastery with a glorious history.
The final stop is the monastery of Diskouri. The main treasure is the icon of St. George the Victorious, also the relics of St. George and St. Timothy are kept in the monastery. Here you will have a luncheon, cooked by monks according to traditionalmonastery recipes.
